Anyway, on with the problem.
Last night I ended up with those stupid System Security 2012 and Privacy Protection malware. So this morning I was able to remove them following instructions here (and they both appear to be totally gone now), but in the middle of the removal the touchpad stopped working. I also noticed at the time that the keyboard and those touch button 'Quick Play' controls along the top (media player controls and volume controls) all no longer work). I can plug in a USB mouse and it works fine, as does a USB keyboard.
I have tried the infamous battery trick (pop the battery out, discharge the power, wait 15-30 seconds, put the battery back), and I have tried to use the HP Recovery tool to restore the factory touchpad drivers to no avail. Are there any other possibilities to fix this? Or is it just possible that my keyboard/touchpad are fried?
The laptop is like 5-6 years old and got heavy usage so it wouldn't surprise me if it's starting to experience hardware failures. It's just the suddenness and completeness of the failure combined with the timing (during the removal of those bits of malware which also were preventing me from doing other things like accessing programs and removed my start menu shortcuts)
thanks in advance.
EDIT: Wanted to note that I did find a USB keyboard to test and it does work. I'm also rerunning my anti-virus/anti-malware programs one more time just to see if there's any lingering problems missed in my first round of repairs. I will update again if that changes anything.

The HP Pavilion's TouchPad replaces your mouse as a pointing device, so you can minimize the need for peripheral devices when traveling on business. This TouchPad is indeed handy, except when typing long documents, which can produce erratic results when your palm accidentally brushes against the TouchPad. Recognizing this potential flaw, HP integrated a switch directly in the TouchPad that allows you to quickly disable or enable the device.
1.
Locate the TouchPad light to the left of the TouchPad. If the light is illuminated, that means the TouchPad is currently disabled, so you don't need to do anything. If the light is out, then the TouchPad is active.
2.Double-tap the top-left corner of the TouchPad in the small rectangular box to disable the TouchPad.
3.Double-tap the box again to toggle the TouchPad back on.

Settings for TouchPad are in Control Panel - Mouse (there might be several tabs with
TouchPad entries) and some have a utility that loads in Notification Area near clock on
lower right.
If needed : (make sure you have rebooted at least once if the above did not work)
Control Panel - Device Manager - Mice and Pointing Devices - Double Click on TouchPad
- Driver's Tab - Click Update Driver (this is may not do anything as MS is far behind
certifying drivers), now RIGHT CLICK on TouchPad and UNINSTALL.
Then go to USB Controllers and UNINSTALL EVERYTHING except the category itself
(all in it). REBOOT
This will refresh the TouchPad Driver and the USB Stack. This does not stop the touchpad
from working.
Here is the similar procedure in XP, Windows 8, Windows 7 and Vista's is the same except
we need to clear the specific device if present.

Then go to System maker's site and get the latest touchpad drivers.
Download - SAVE - go to where you put it - Right Click on - RUN AS ADMIN.
This utility also helps to control the TouchPad :
TouchFreeze

Hope this helps.
